It contains the Color, Swatches, Stroke and Brushes studio panels. Item 5 is what I call the Color Studio Panel Group. Anytime you want to reset the studio panel groups back to the default view, select Reset Studio at the bottom of the View Studio dropdown box. To make a panel visible, simple click it to add a checkmark and click again to remove the checkmark and hide the panel. You can access all of the studio panels by selecting View in the Menu Bar, and then selecting Studio. There are a number of studio panels that do not show up in the default view of AD. The groups contain individual Studio Panels that can be re-arranged by dragging the tab, and customized by clicking on the small menu icon (4 horizontal lines) in the upper right hand corner of the individual panels. Items 5, 6, & 7 are known as Studio Panel Groups. This is where all the fun happens as you create your beautiful digital art. To use any the tools in AD, simply select the tool from the Tools Panel then go to your document and click and drag to create and adjust objects.īetween the Tools Panel on the left and the Studio Panels on the right hand side, sits the Workspace. You can customize the Tools Panel by going to View in the Menubar, scrolling to the bottom of the dropdown menu, and selecting Customize Tools. Each Persona has its own set of tools that will show up in the tools panel when you click on the different persona icons. This panel sits on the left hand side of the workspace and has all of the relevant tools associated with the current Persona. This toolbar provides quick and easy shortcuts to the relevant tools you’ll need as you work on your project. This is a dynamic set of tools that changes according to what tool or object you have selected. Item 3 sits right on top of the workspace and is called the Context Tool Bar. Pixels do blur and get distorted when scaled. Typically you use pixels to create textures, and things like clouds and grass that you apply with a brush. The Pixel Persona is the second icon in the Persona group an it’s used to affect the pixels (think photograph) of your image. Vector objects are created mathematically by the computer, so they stay sharp and crisp no matter how you scale them. The Draw Persona& is the default Persona when you open the program and it’s the first icon in the Persona group in the Toolbar. To do this AD created different Personas for each method. Think Photo and Illustrator in the same program. One of the most powerful things about AD is the ability to create and use vector objects and pixel tools in the same program. The first group starting from the left is the different Personas (Draw, Pixel, and Export respectively), then there are the Access Defaults, the different View Modes, the Object Controls (backward, forward, flip, and rotate) and then the Design Aids (alignment, snapping, geometry) and at the far right are the Insertion controls.īefore we go much further, there are a couple of things you need to know to understand about how AD is set up. Right below the Menu Bar is Item 2, called the Tool Bar and it contains groups of controls and design aids. Like most other software, the menu categories File, Edit, Text, Layer, Select, View, Window, and Help all have drop down menus that give you access to all of the different commands and options in AD. Item 1 is the uppermost menu in Affinity Designer, called the Menu Bar. Use the image as a reference as we go through the different Menus, Bars and Panels. The image above is what you’ll see now that AD is open. The popup box will appear and you can reselect the option to view at startup in the lower left hand corner. If at some point you want the popup window back again, go toHelp in the Menu Bar (see the Menu Bar section below) and select Welcome. After a while you may not - at that point, click off the small arrow in the lower left hand corner to shut off this panel on startup. Since you are new to AD, you may want to see this menu each time you open the program. Select Close if you just want to close the popup box, and select New Document to create a new document which will bring up the document setup panel. ![]() ![]() When you first open Affinity Designer, a pop-up box will appear with some advertising for various Affinity programs, and on the right hand side, there will be options to View Samples, View Tutorials, some social media buttons, and at the bottom will be two buttons: Close and New Document. So let’s just jump right in and get started. By simply going over the layout and knowing where everything is in Affinity Designer (AD), you’ll get past that initial confusion and be on your way to creating beautiful graphics. ![]()
